Dad altered his birth Certificate so he could join the RAF in World War 2. He was ground crew at first as a fireman. He hated it as it was very traumatic pulling burning bodies from downed aircraft.

in 1942 he deployed to Canada as a body Guard to a Wing Commander. He traveled to and from Canada on numerous occasions, which was quite dangerous, as it was the convoy route, and the flying was dangerous also. On one of his trips with the Wing Commander he was hit by shrapnel, which resulted in him having partial paralysis of his right hand.

He was shocked at how well the American troops were fed on the ships travelling across the Atlantic when the folks in the UK were struggling to get the basics. He did then developed his love apple pie and ice cream.

In 1945 he was present for the re repatriation of the Russian POW's and spoke of how terribly they had been treated. He was also present for the formal surrender of the Germans in Norway.

During his time in Norway, he was gifted a first edition (signed) of Gone With The Wind. He swopped (traded) it on VE Day for a bottle of Gin, he never drank Gin again after that as it made him so ill.
