Childhood in Cardiff

When dad was a young boy bout 7  he played truant from school one day and went down the docks in Cardiff, it was a very warm day so they went swimming in the docks.  One of the boys he was with got into difficulties, Dad and another boy saved him and got him on the quayside.  It was witnessed by one of the men working on the dock who praised them for saving the boy, and asked their names and school.
The following day at school Dad was in assembly when the Headmaster called him and the other boy t their feet told them to come forward, they thought they were going to be praised to swaggered up to the front.  The headmaster gave them the cane right there in front of the school, 6 to the left palm.

Another time he was playing on the school roof and fell off and broke his arm.  When he went to school the headmaster gave him the cane for playing on the roof.
